Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day?

It's not a simple story with this February festivity. In fact, historians haven't been able to agree on its origin at all! "The New York Times pondered over this in 1853 but called it 'one of those mysterious historical…problems which are doomed never to be solved.'" One theory is that the holiday evolved from an ancient Roman festival to welcome Spring and another centers on a real-life Saint Valentine who defied government orders in the name of romance.

"Whatever its origins, Valentine's Day is now a big deal." Whether you're celebrating your partner, your pal or your pet, it's a good reminder to show your circle how much you care. In recent years, there's been "a change in the holiday from a celebration of romantic partners to 'an everybody-is-included romp' that celebrates different kinds of affection and attachment."

How can we celebrate Valentine's Day?

Luckily, February 14th falls on a Friday this year so The Club at Olde Cypress is going all out with our Valentine's Day celebrations and we think you'll be smitten with what we have planned. 😍

The Olde Cypress culinary team is preparing a three-course dinner, alongside live music by the Jackie Beaumont Duo, that might just have you falling head over heels. The evening's menu begins with a fresh, flavorful first bite: our Artisan Lettuce & Blood Orange Salad is dressed with candied walnuts, Pecorino Romano and a tangy sherry raspberry vinaigrette atop zesty cress and frisée. Awaken your taste buds (and hearts) with a crisp sauv blanc.

For the main course, tender Petite Filet Mignon and Butter-poached Lobster Tail are a match made in culinary heaven. Accompanied by truffle-whipped potatoes, roasted carrots and king oyster mushrooms, this signature dish is finished with Madeira demi-glace and chive butter. Pair with a buttery chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon.

End on a sweet note with White Chocolate Strawberry Tiramisu, topped with chocolate shavings and silky crème anglaise. Your hearts may melt, as you dance the night away.

Who are we celebrating this Valentine's Day?

The Olde Cypress social scene attracts the very best people from all over, and that's why we're highlighting some of our lovely couples:

Wanda & Wayne Buchen have been married for 35 years! This incredible duo met working at an apparel company and they enjoy fine dining, going out with friends, watching sports together and spending time at Olde Cypress. When it comes to love, their best advice is, "Deal with it, be available for each other, say I love you (meaning it) and take the time to know what each other's needs are."

Anne & Stewart Moreland have been married 43 years! It was love at first sight for the sweet couple as they met and danced the night away to their favorite song, "Just you and Me." Fast forward years later to their life here at Olde Cypress and they are fully immersed in the lifestyle – enjoying exercising, bike riding, relaxing and fine dining. They delight in meeting new friends from across the country, "and in particular, learning the wonderfully unique cultural superiority claims of our Canadian brethren." When it comes to love, their best advice is, "God gave us two ears and one mouth, so we should LISTEN twice as much as we speak."
